Despite growing global concerns about the recently discovered Omicron variant of the coronavirus, Mayor-elect Eric Adams is still planning to visit Ghana, confirmed spokesman Evan Thies.
“I made a promise to myself, Ghana after the 400.” One of the things I wanted to do with this election was to reset a negative narrative so that we can have a fairer and more united future. I will continue to be in touch with the transition team on our January 1st progress and with the mayor on urgent matters, including Omicron, while I am in Ghana. “
While not much is known about what is known as the Omicron strain, New York state and city leaders say they are “closely monitoring” the newly identified variant of the coronavirus and no cases of the newly identified variant have been discovered in New York or the United States Rest of the US for now.
Flights from South Africa and seven other South African countries to John F. Kennedy International Airport were only manned by American citizens on Monday as the nation’s travel ban goes into effect to slow the spread of a new variant of COVID-19.
It is still unclear how great the threat Omicron poses to New Yorkers – vaccinated or not – but Governor Kathy Hochul encouraged everyone to double the precautions: wearing masks, washing hands and vaccinating.
“The vaccine also remains one of our greatest weapons in the fight against the pandemic, and this news underscores the need for each of us to get vaccinated and have the booster shot when fully vaccinated,” said Hochul.
The Omicron variant of COVID-19 appears to be more contagious than the Delta variant, and the high number of mutations in Omicron means all vaccines may be less effective, Moderna’s CEO said Monday.
The variant scientifically known as B.1.1.529 was little known to the public until November 24, when South African officials reported it to the WHO. It only took the organization two days to significantly improve its profile and status.
“This variant has a large number of mutations, some of which are worrying. Preliminary evidence suggests an increased risk of reinfection with this variant compared to other high-concern variants,” the organization said in a statement on Friday.
“(This) variant was discovered faster than previous attacks, suggesting that this variant may have a growth advantage.”
On the morning of November 29, the variant was detected in at least 15 countries on five continents, including Canada. (The Dutch state broadcaster NOS reported that of 600 passengers on two quarantined flights from South Africa, 10% tested positive for a version of the coronavirus.)
According to media reports, several of the confirmed cases were vaccinated, although South African doctors found that the vast majority of those infected were unvaccinated.
The Omicron variant of the coronavirus is worrying enough now that there is an official mask recommendation from the New York Health Commissioner.
“What we are saying is if you are indoors – regardless of vaccination status – everyone should wear a mask,” said the city’s health commissioner Dr. Dave Chokshi, on Monday during the press conference of Mayor Bill de Blasio.
“When it comes to COVID I have said time and again that I will follow science and our public health professionals as a leader – and at the moment, travel is only prohibited to South African countries as a precaution,” said Adams, “Should the federal government theirs.” If you change travel policies, I will be following them immediately. In the meantime, New Yorkers must remain vigilant to prevent the spread of COVID, including wearing masks and getting their vaccines and booster shots.
