Transcripts released Monday shed new light on the behind-the-scenes role of CNN anchor Chris Cuomo advising his brother, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, on sexual harassment allegations that drove him out of office.
Chris Cuomo told investigators he spoke regularly with his brother, exchanged text messages with his top advisors, and received emails in February in March when they came up with a response to several women’s allegations.
He also offered to try to find out through his “sources” whether more women would come forward, including possibly finding out their identities.
“Please let me help with the preparations,” said Chris Cuomo in a message to Melissa DeRosa, the governor’s secretary at the time, in early March. According to a New York Times report describing an alleged kiss from the governor, DeRosa wrote: “I have a lead with the wedding girl.”
“I would – if I was asked, turn to sources, other journalists, to see if they heard from anyone else,” Chris Cuomo told investigators.
Chris Cuomo’s role as unofficial advisor to his brother was previously known. After highlighting some of the details of his work in an August report by Attorney General Letitia James, the journalist admitted that it was a “mistake” to be involved in strategic discussions with a group of his brother’s advisors.
But a transcript of Chris Cuomo’s July interview with investigators, as well as the posting of 169 pages of email, text messages, and other communications provide more detail on his involvement in shaping his brother’s message – and his actions as a bulldog with top aides about Strategy .
“I was concerned that this was not being handled properly and it was not my job to deal with it, okay?” Chris Cuomo testified. “I don’t work for the governor. I am not defending him on this matter. I don’t cover it. You know, that’s – that’s not what I do. “
“I worry about my brother and I worry that this will be handled as well as possible. And my feeling was that according to my basic mantra you have to tell the truth and stand in front of it when you have something to say. And if you have something to own, you have to do that too, ”he said.
Andrew Cuomo resigned in August to avoid a likely impeachment trial after an independent investigation found he sexually molested at least 11 women.
Chris Cuomo, the host of CNN’s “Cuomo Prime Time”, has defended himself by saying he never covered Cuomo’s situation for CNN and never tried to influence the coverage.
“I was trying to do the right thing,” said the host in August on the show, adding that he “had nothing under control”.
A message to CNN representatives for comment was not immediately returned.
The transcript of Chris Cuomo’s interview was part of a new series of materials released by the Attorney General’s Office on Monday, collected during their month-long investigation into the governor’s behavior towards women.
For the first time, a copy of Governor Cuomo’s video testimony was released. Copies of it had previously been published.
